Gum is a hardwood. It will absorb rain, please consider this when purchasing during winter. Slow burning, maximum heat output, clean burning. Suited to both open fires and log burners.  A softwood or kindling should be used to start your fire and a medium or soft wood should be used with gum once a good fire is established.
