Frequently asked questions

What does 4m3 certified firewood look like?

Our firewood is sold by thrown volume, measured in certified bins approved by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment MBIE

Thrown firewood volume will settle when stacked. As a general guide, 4 cubic metres of thrown firewood is approximately equal to 2.7 cubic metres when stacked.

Log sizes may vary, so the final stacked volume can fluctuate slightly from load to load.

The photo shown represents an estimated 4m³ of Douglas-Fir firewood for visual reference.

This method ensures consistent, fair, and compliant measurement for every customer.

How much firewood do I need to purchase?

Firewood use depends on how big your home is and how often you heat it.

Smaller homes are generally easier to heat and use less firewood per year.

For customers who burn mainly in the evenings and weekends, we recommend 4 to 6 cubic metres (4m³–6m³).

Larger homes, or households where someone is home during the day, typically require 8 cubic metres (8m³) or more to stay warm throughout the season.

We supply firewood year-round, so topping up as needed is easy and convenient.

Tip: Ordering 4m³ loads offers better value compared to multiple smaller 2m³ deliveries.

What wood type is best for me?

Start your fire with kindling to quickly build up hot embers — the key to an efficient, long-lasting fire.

If you’re after quick, instant heat (perfect after work), Split Pine or Douglas-Fir are excellent choices. These soft to medium-density woods ignite easily and produce high heat output with a moderate burn time.

For a longer, consistent burn, Macrocarpa and Douglas-Fir are reliable medium woods that work well together for a warm, cozy fire.

Need a longer overnight burn? Gum, a dense hardwood, burns hot and slow. For best results, we recommend mix burning Gum with a soft or medium wood once a hot base is established.

When available, Manuka is our premium native hardwood — known for its high heat and beautiful aroma, it’s perfect for both ambiance and performance.

Is the firewood ready to burn upon delivery?

Our best advice: order early to avoid running out during the colder months.

Firewood is a natural product and, like a sponge, it absorbs and releases moisture from the air and ground. Even though our firewood is fully seasoned, it is stored outdoors, so you may notice some surface moisture — especially during wet seasons. This surface moisture will evaporate quickly when the firewood is stored correctly.

For best results, store your firewood in a well-ventilated, covered area that protects it from rain while allowing airflow.

At Wholesale Firewood Supplies, we take pride in providing a hassle-free firewood experience — so you can relax and enjoy a warm, cozy fire whenever you need it.

Why should I only use seasoned firewood?

Seasoned firewood burns hotter, cleaner, and more efficiently than unseasoned wood. It also reduces the risk of creosote buildup in your chimney.

You can learn more about wood burning standards from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
